Fatty Liver

Fatty liver disease refers to the accumulation of fat in liver cells caused by excessive consumption of carbohydrates, fats, and sweets, often associated with low physical activity.

Typically asymptomatic until complications arise, such as chronic liver inflammation (e.g., cirrhosis).

  • Blood tests to evaluate metabolic changes (e.g., triglycerides, cholesterol, blood sugar) and liver function to detect liver inflammation.
  • Hepatic elastography: an imaging test that uses a transducer on the abdominal wall to measure liver stiffness and fat concentration.
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Pharmacological management for elevated triglycerides or cholesterol
  • Diabetes management or insulin resistance treatment, if present
  • Yellow tint to the skin (jaundice)
  • Dark stools
  • Abdominal perimeter increase
  • Swelling of the legs
